Some items that caught our attention over the last several days:

Saw an interesting post in Patent Docs on the intellectual property regime needed to sustain biotechnology breakthroughs … it is worth a read:

It would be tragic if the current economic disruptions “killed off” a
company with the combination of researchers, technology and management
that could provide a future life-saving drug because we did not have
the foresight to provide the conditions in which it could endure.

And in the Ft. Worth Star Telegram there’s an outline of how biotech innovation translates into economic development. According to the post, Texas Governor Rick Perry said the biosciences are:

“the next big thing in the global economy.” There are about 33,000 Texans employed in biotechnology, with an average salary of more than $84,000, according to the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Tourism. “More investments mean more jobs and innovations that improve human life, and that is really what this has all been about,” Perry said.

And according to Physorg.com, we’re right on the cusp of some great breakthroughs.

“If you look at all the things biology can do with technology, we have not yet scratched the surface,” said Drew Endy, assistant professor of bioengineering at Stanford University.

The post goes on to provide an overview of some of the more exciting developments that await us.
