UPDATE: KEEP YOUR BIRTHDAY GREETINGS COMING! It may be belated now, but we’re still collecting your birthday greetings to send to Dr. Borlaug. So please POST A COMMENT to wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his work. We’ll be compiling the comments and sending them next week.
Today is the 95th birthday of Norman Borlaug, an agricultural scientist who is widely known as the father of the Green Revolution. Dr. Borlaug, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work on world hunger, is credited with saving over 1 billion lives from starvation through his tireless efforts to improve world food production through biotechnology. Dr. Borlaugh is one of only five people in history to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.
I’m sure our words cannot do justice to Dr. Borlaug’s tremendous contributions to humanity and the environment. So, we’ll let him speak for himself:
Also be sure to watch Dr. Borlaug’s speech at the Nobel Centenial Symposia in December 2001.

Thank you Dr. Borlaug for giving us wheat!
Happy Birthday!
Wow, who knew the Green Revolution was so “old”
Dr. Borlaug, thank you for your work to improve the food supply and hopefully one day, end starvation.
Happy Birthday Dr. Borlaug! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.
Dr. Borlaug, you continue to be an inspiration to many. Your legacy serves as a reminder that the work of a single person can affect the world in a profound way. Best wishes to you.
Happy B-day! Not only has the green revolution saved millions of lives and fed billions of people … looks like it has given your life extraordinary length! I promise to start eating my greens today!
I was taught when I was growing up in the 1950s that the End Of The World would have occurred long before today’s date as a result of population-driven war and famine. You are one big reason why my teachers got it wrong. When history looks back and identifies the dozen or so people in my lifetime who made a positive difference in the world, you’re going to be one of them – and a highlight of my life was meeting you once a decade or so back and shaking your hand. Thank you – not only on my own behalf but also for the sake of my children and grandchildren (who will never know you or what you did for them) – for the life’s work you undertook that now offers them a future.

Happy Birthday Dr. Borlaug, and thank you for using science to help farmers around the world. You are a true pioneer.
95 is quite an accomplishment…as has been all of your life’s work. Thank you so much for your impact and continuing legacy in agriculture. Having had worked at the Rice Research Center in Stuttgart, AR; and, the Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center, your name is synonymous with rice and the begining conversation to every new project that is undertaken. You have left an indelable mark on every human life by helping ensure a more abundant food supply while mitigating our imprint on the environment. I aspire to be as insightful as you someday. Thanks again and Happy Birthday!!
A TRUE American Hero. Happy Birthday!
Dr. Bourlag, thank you for your vision, devotion, and inspiration, and have a very happy birthday!
History is filled with clever men who apply their skills to elevate and enrich themselves while degrading and destroying their fellows.
Far more rare are the clever men who apply their skills to elevate and enrich others. You, Dr. Borlaug, are one of these rarest of men.
It can be said of yet fewer men that they genuinely made the WORLD a better place. You have done that as well. For that, you are a hero and an immortal. Thank you for all you have done.
If you’re ever in Kansas City, the ribs are on me! It’d be my great honor to feed Norman Borlaug.
Happy birthday, and many happy returns!
Best regards,
Maureen

Wish I could have joined the celebration of your birthday today in Texas — but I celebrated in a different way. I spent time off and on throughout the day talking about all the great things agriculture is doing to produce more, conserve more and improve farmers lives. Thanks for getting so much of this going and for your continued vision. We look forward to celebrating you 100th with great smiles and more advances in feeding the world!

The world is a greater place because of your achievements and your will to strive for a world free from hunger. I hope to one day be able to accomplish even a fraction of what you have accomplished. Thank you and best wishes!
Happy Birthday!
Thank you for showing all the good that people can do.
It was wonderful to see you looking so fit and witty on the occasion of your 95th yesterday, Dr. B. Many thanks again to you and your wonderful family for inviting us to join in the festivities.
Norman Borlaug was the only person during the twentieth century who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for work in agriculture and food. I still remeber first time when I cross the ocean to attend the biotech conference and listen for his lecture in Iowa 2003. He is great man. I wish you a very happy birthday Dr. Borlaug. Greetings from Saudi Arabia.
I interviewed you Dr. Borlaug for a video we were producing about biotechnology. It was one of the greatest days of my career. I was with a great man. Thank you and happy birthday!
From a daughter-in-law of the George Harrison Shull family. Your are a special hero in the Shull family, OF COURSE !
(My husband, Harrison Shull, was notable in the field of quantum mechanics — it is best that sons do not directly compete with their acomplished fathers. As you no doubt remember, G. H. Shull was a Princeton genetics researcher (corn).
Dr. Borlaug: Happy Birthday, you have allowed so many others to enjoy birthday thanks to your green revolution. I have had the pleasure of working with you and my counterparts at the Iowa Corn Board as we hosted the first 5 International Biotech conference. You had rock star status as those from around the world wanted to thank you for what you have done. Enjoy your birthday, and as I shared with you many times, my father farmed until he was 95 and both you and my father have helped deliver food to many but from different pathway, I admire you both.
Thank you very much for having shared all your knoledments and having tought us a way of working. I think you are a great Human Being, you have been very important for my father Jorge, I know you through him….Happy Birthday!!!!
