Health care reform is moving very quickly in Congress. And if we don’t act, the breakthroughs and cures being developed through biotechnology may be at risk.
The 7.5 Million men and women in the biotech industry go to work every day finding cures for debilitating diseases. They are at the front lines, fighting to put an end to cancer, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis and other diseases that tear families apart and overwhelm our health care system.
Congress will be voting soon on how long innovative biological medicines should be protected before other companies can enter the market with imitator products – so-called biosimilars.
There must be a pathway for these products to reach consumers. However, we must ensure that the law provides a fair balance – lowering costs while giving innovator companies the time they need to earn back the money spent on R&D so they can invest in future cures.
We must act now, or we risk stifling research and killing the possibility of finding future cures.
